The junior squeeze: 1 in 20 remote jobs is for people starting out

We sorted ten weeks of remote listings by level. Junior roles were never common; they are getting rarer, and the ones that exist are mostly 'associate' jobs in sales and operations.

Key takeaways

  • Across ten weeks of new remote listings (31 Aug to 4 Nov 2026), 4% to 6% had junior, entry-level, associate, intern, graduate or trainee in the title.
  • Senior, staff, lead, principal, head, director and VP titles were 30% to 40%: between five and ten senior roles for every junior one, depending on the week.
  • The most common junior remote titles are associate roles in customer success, operations, sales and business development, plus internships. Junior engineering roles are rare.
  • Only 3.2% of open junior roles are open worldwide, so for people outside the US and Western Europe the entry door is narrower still.

"Remote, entry level" is one of the most searched phrases in job search, and one of the least served. We wanted a number, so we sorted every remote listing we first saw over ten weeks by the level in its title.

The share, week by week #

"Junior" here means the title contains junior, jr, entry-level, intern or internship, graduate, associate, trainee or apprentice. "Senior+" means senior, sr, staff, principal, lead, head, director, VP or chief. Most titles carry no level at all, so the two columns do not add up to 100%.

In no week did junior roles pass 6.5%. For every junior role there were between five and ten senior ones.

Part of the drop is us, and that is a finding too #

The share fell from about 6% in September to 4–5% in late October. Be careful with that trend. On 19 October we started reading employers' own career pages directly, alongside job boards. That week's jump to 9,121 listings is that change.

Companies' own career pages turned out to be more senior-heavy than job boards: the senior share jumped to 40% the same week. So part of the decline is a change in what we see. The rest is consistent with what employers, recruiters and the people searching have been saying all year: the bottom rung of the remote ladder is thin.

What junior remote jobs actually look like #

The most common junior remote titles open right now:

  1. Customer success associate
  2. Marketing intern
  3. Operations associate
  4. Junior project manager
  5. Business development associate
  6. Sales associate
  7. Founder's associate

Notice what is missing: junior developers. Engineering appears in the junior list, but far below sales, operations and customer-facing work. The classic path into tech, a junior developer job learned on the job, is the one remote hiring serves least.

Why the bottom rung is thin #

  • Learning needs proximity. Beginners learn by watching and asking. Companies that hire juniors tend to want them in an office, or at least hybrid.
  • Remote teams are lean. Small distributed teams prefer people who can work unsupervised from the first week.
  • Routine work is being automated. The tasks that used to train juniors (first drafts, simple tickets, data clean-up, basic support) are the tasks AI tools now handle first.
  • Global competition. A remote junior role open to the world can get thousands of applications. Many employers respond by not posting one.

And for people outside the US, narrower again #

Only 3.2% of open junior roles are open worldwide, slightly below the board average of 3.9%. Most junior remote roles are limited to the country where the company already has an entity. If you live outside the US, Canada and Western Europe, an entry-level remote job that is genuinely open to you is rare. We counted how much rarer in a separate analysis.

What to do with this #

  • Search for "associate", not "junior". Associate titles are where most entry roles hide.
  • Look at AI-training work. Annotation, rating and evaluation roles are open to more countries than almost any other category. Pay varies widely; check who employs you.
  • Do one in-person or hybrid role first. A year of experience moves you from the 5% column into the 60% of listings with no level in the title.
  • Publish proof. With hundreds of applicants per remote junior role, a portfolio, write-ups or public work is what gets read.

How we counted #

Listings first seen by remoty.work in each calendar week, remote only, matched on the job title. Titles are a blunt instrument: "Associate Director" counts as both, and many junior-friendly roles carry no level. The weekly totals reflect what we saw, which grew when we added sources; shares are more comparable across weeks than counts.

Questions people ask

Are there entry-level remote jobs?

Yes, but few. In our data, 4% to 6% of new remote listings each week between September and November 2026 were labelled junior, entry-level, associate, intern, graduate or trainee. Most are in customer success, operations, sales and business development.

Why are there so few junior remote jobs?

Training a beginner works best with someone sitting next to them, so companies hire juniors where they have offices. Remote teams also tend to be small and expect people to work without much supervision. AI tools that take over routine tasks add pressure on the most junior work.

How do I get a remote job with no experience?

Look at associate roles in customer success, operations and sales, AI-training work (annotation, rating, evaluation) that is open to many countries, and internships. Build public proof of skill, and consider an in-person or hybrid first role, then move to remote with experience.
